Is there a way to keep all the gasoline from spilling or is this inevitable?

it is not possible keep every last drop, but you can minimize the loss by pulling the fuel pump fuse and restarting the car. let it run until it dies then change the filter. you are going to loose what is in the filter itself and a little from the lines but after that you will not even loose a noticeable amount.

relieve pressure in the fuel line
such as if your car has a fuel shut of switch
or just pull out the fuel pump fuse
turn the key a couple times
then disconnect
you will ALWAYS get some gas spilling out
