Make sure you have the right filter, there were a few different filters for the 05 new style TDI. See this page for more details on changing the diesel fuel filter.

You have to order the filter by VIN, hope you got the right one! It should just pull straight out.

pull up on the cartridge, don't forget to prime the filter after or you will run the pump dry and that's no fun
I've got a Jetta TDI. But it's '03, so I don't know if it'll help. Look for a screw that you can untighten with a phillips head. Pull the clip out of the top of the Black piece where the two rubber hoses meet, and then pull it out. Save the clip in a place where you won't lose it. Use pliers to loosen the brackets on the other two hoses, then pull those two tubes off. Then, after the phillips head screw has been loosened, simply pull the old filter out. You drain it by unscrewing the white plastic piece at the bottom. Careful. Diesel will come out of it. Then simply take the filter to your Auto Parts store for recycling.

After you replace the filter, you'll need to fill it with new diesel fuel, so you'll also need a funnel. Pour it in slowly, and let the diesel soak into the filter. BE PATIENT! You've got to wait until it's filled to the very top. Shake and jiggle the filter gently to dislodge air. You should reattach the two hoses, and secure their brackets. Stick the black thing back in and slide the clip back in.

After the hoses are back in place, you can start the car, and it should pump the diesel through the lines to the new filter. You may have to go back and pour more diesel into the filter, as trying to start the car will have freed up space for more diesel inside the filter. Don't give up! And whatever you do, don't hold the starter longer than 3 seconds. You can damage the engine that way. Do it in 2 to 3 second increments only.

Hope this helps. :) Email me at ebocc@cox.net for more help if you need it.
You have to turn the screw on top of the filter in order to release the filter cartridge.
